This past weekend I, along with several others from the Capstone class, attended the first session of Innovation Tools. My team focused on the DSAGC as one of the group projects and we were able to come up with some interesting ideas.
The first tool we learned was subtraction, which removes a key component from the product or service that you are trying to innovate. We found it a struggle to remove something from the DSAGC organization, and discovered how interconnected each function is. The organization is made up of services, programs, communication, employees, and community involvement. Removing any of these key aspects would change the way that the organization functions. While the DSAGC is not looking to change their operating processes, it could give insight into how to better reach their community, and provide even greater benefit to those with disabilities.
Subtraction may not be the best tool to utilize for this type of a 'product' when we are coming up with our recommendations for new products and services, but it is an interesting one to consider. We are removing our fixedness, and could perhaps remove some that those at DSAGC have as well as to how a non-profit organization operates. There are many ways to offer help, and it doesn't necessarily have to come in the already used, standard forms.
I look forward to the increased brain power that having a team behind this part of the project offers and the next tools we will be introduced to over the coming weeks. The ideas that come from this class are going to greatly impact the long term transformations of the organization.
