The diversity of a group leads to diversity of thought. We talk about diversity as a great thing in many areas of life, and I would argue it is, but often when we are approached with diversity of thought, it is easy to dismiss the other as incorrect, ignorant, or lesser. It is comfortable to have a homogenous group that will all say the same thing - - - but does it lead to the strongest result?
I think not.
Working with different types of people and different approaches can make for drastically different (and wonderful) outcomes than if we exclusively worked with like-minded individuals. Capstone is meant to be a challenge to prove day-one readiness, and part of that is understanding how to work with different people. Reflecting of positive brainstorming, and not dismissing ANY idea, helps keep this perspective in sight. Ideas must not be dismissed, but investigated in its own right.
As my team hosts an AVM workshop with our client this week, I hope that we all keep this in mind and allow ourselves to have unexpected outcomes. When you assume you know what will happen or what will be best, you may have a self-fulfilling hypothesis that may not actually be what is best.
Keep on challenging your mind, expectations, and assumptions! It can lead to great places and make your research deeper.
