There are lot many things you will learn throughout your capstone. It is important that you acknowledge what you learn and apply it during the process. The best advice I would like to give all the future capstoners is that give your best to the project right from the beginning and leave no work till the end. Time is your enemy and if you do not focus on time management, your project might take much more time to complete then you expect.
Revise the ‘Big Picture’ concepts at the beginning itself.
Share your experiences through blogs as it counts for a good grade and also helps others to learn from your experiences.
Use field book effectively as a powerful tool.
Contact Drew when the problem arises and not after it worsens.
Do not give up if things look messy. There would be hurdles but face them positively.
Get to know your team mates better so that you can work well as a team. There is no better feeling than hearing this statement from your professor-“You guys are a great team”
Communicate consistently with your client.
Schedule the review meetings with Drew on timely basis.
Stay well dressed and professional at client meetings as you represent UC in front of them.
If you can, give your client more than what they have asked for.
Do not assume that things will always flow as per your thoughts. 99 % of the times, your tasks will not be completed at a decided time. But create a timeline and use it as a reference to avoid delays.
Be aware of the charter while working. Do not give out client information if they do not wish so, during research or any other activity. If in doubt, ask Drew.
Give the final presentation in a way the client would like it to be and not how you think would be ideal.
The project will get over in the blink of an eye so enjoy it. The work would be hectic but worthwhile.
I hope this helps and I would like to wish all the future capstoners the very best for their projects.
Good Luck!
