After three meetings over the past two weeks – two with our P&G clients and one with just my team – I feel that I have a pretty firm grasp on what we are tasked with delivering at the end of the semester. Our project was immediately intriguing and exciting to me. However, I struggled at first to understand exactly how we will go about executing it and how SIT will fit into the process.
After going to the SIT training at P&G this past Thursday and meeting face-to-face with our clients for the second time, the pieces started to fall into place. During the meeting, the importance of asking the right questions was reinforced in me. My team was given an informative brief and we had the chance to ask a number of questions in our initial client meeting. Still, after having a few days to let the information percolate, I had so many new questions. Putting them down on paper and discussing with my team which were the most pressing to ask was extremely helpful.
I know there’s a mountain of work to be done from now until our project’s completion, but I feel more empowered now than I did a week ago. Working with P&G is undoubtedly a unique and exciting opportunity. At the same time, it can feel quite intimidating. At the beginning, I worried that we would not be able to capture any truly new insights for such a huge and sophisticated company. Now that I understand more about the issue we will be working on and how we will be using SIT to come up with solutions, I am more confident in our ability to produce something of value.
Finally, it’s been interesting to observe the P&G workplace dynamics and to have an, albeit limited, insider view of their company culture. Up until this point, all of my professional experiences have been with either the government or non-profit organizations, so this exposure to P&G has been very informative so far. I’m looking forward to more glimpses of this world in the coming weeks and months.
