This week marks our final full week of our capstone project. Our presentation has been scheduled for next Thursday, and Erin and I have been making the final edits and changes to our paper and presentation. Somehow this project has felt both that it's lasted forever and also that it's flown by.
Some of the best advice that I could give to future groups is to start your paper early on. This is something Erin and I did right away; every time we finished a component to our project we wrote that element of the paper. That way, in the final weeks we didn't have this looming task of putting everything together, but the paper had essentially already built itself.
Another piece of advice would be knowing when to say "no" or when something is out of scope. In our initial client meeting, we had about 11 people in the room from all areas of the Water Works business who all had different agendas and interests for our final output. We ended up agreeing to more than we should have and took on what Drew said was "3 capstone projects" instead of just one. In the end we finally got to a good place with one of the project components being passed on to another team this coming summer. The advice there would be to know how to set expectations up front instead of thinking a good consultant is someone who delivers on everything.
