This past week I was able to speak with Drew about the status of my project. Though I am feeling very much on my own right now, I still felt that there was enough for me to work with in order to come with a good summary and some recommendations. Firstly, it was interesting to understand why existing volunteers volunteer and why existing donors donate. What came through most in all the research was the insight that everyone is looking for an emotional connection to the organization. This was also clear in the value mapping exercise, and it is good to know that the two are aligned. Whether it is getting to know the organization through someone already involved, or having a personal connection to a child afflicted by a terminal illness, respondents craved that emotional bond.
This is a great insight that can definitely be incorporated into the final presentation to potential donors. The key will be to tell a story that the donors and their respective constituents can appreciate that inspires them to support the great work the organization is doing. It also gave me quite a few ideas on how to continue to engage current donors and volunteers. Though for the most part the organization sees longevity in participation from current donors and volunteers, it is never a bad idea to continue to engage your existing source of income and labor.
