My Capstone project has been an interesting learning experience thus far, and I do not foresee that changing. To exemplify, I was assigned to work with Barefoot Proximity on a client project for Bayer CropScience.
The initial client meeting went as expected, as I met with Craig from Barefoot Proximity. We both introduced ourselves and discussed a little bit about our work history. Then, he told me about his history with the Bayer account and some of the work the company has done for them. He continued by telling me about the farming industry, where it is and the potential of where it can go. Craig made an interesting analogy stating that farmers are the biggest gamblers because they put all their resources into their land and crops but there are factors out of their control and they do not know if they will yield the return on their investment. I also learned that Bayer was the first company to put nitrogen in the soil, which is important for plant growth.
However, the proposed project was very different than what I was expecting, as I was asked to write a whitepaper on digital farming. Although the project is not what I initially believed it would be, learning about digital farming has been fascinating because it is an industry I know absolutely nothing about. In addition, I think it taught me an important lesson, that you cannot assume a client’s wants or needs in the business world. I look forward to the rest of the semester and continuing to become more knowledgeable about an unfamiliar topic.
